When Accessing Playboy.Com on BlackBerry Screens in Indonesia

Women use their BlackBerry mobile phones at a market in Jakarta on January 14, 2010. The Canadian maker of the popular BlackBerry smartphone hit back at Indonesian officials claims it does not pay taxes or contribute to the Southeast Asian countrys booming economy.

The maker of BlackBerry smartphones has started blocking access to pornographic websites in Indonesia ahead of a Friday deadline that could have seen its lucrative operating permit revoked.

In a statement on his Twitter account, Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring said Canadian company Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM) had complied with his demands to ensure Indonesians are not exposed to sexually explicit websites.

“Praise to God, RIM has complied with Indonesia's laws and regulations,“ the minister, a conservative Muslim who has waged a campaign against illicit material on the Internet, said.

“Pornography has begun to be blocked. Please go ahead with doing business as long as laws are complied with.“

Indonesians trying to access websites such as www.playboy.com now receive a message on their BlackBerry screens stating: “The site you are trying to open is not accessible through this network.“

RIM confirmed it had started implementing a filtering system designed to block websites deemed inappropriate by the government.

“RIM is now in the process of implementing an Internet content filtering solution that addresses our carrier partners' regulatory obligations in Indonesia,“ the company said in a statement.

“The technical solution meets the ministry's stated requirements and is designed to utilize the same standard filter lists provided by the government to the industry in Indonesia.“

RIM said it was pleased to have enacted the pornography-blocking system ahead of the deadline set by Sembiring.

“RIM looks forward to continuing our investments in the Indonesian marketplace and to continue supporting the needs of our customers, developers and distribution partners.“

Indonesia is one of RIM's most important markets, with more than two million BlackBerry devices sold. RIM is the world's fourth biggest smartphone platform, with global sales of 11.9 million units, according to research firm Gartner Inc. (IT).

The company doesn't filter its web content in any of its other markets around the world. Sembiring's campaign against RIM has sparked a torrent of concern in Indonesia's blogosphere as alarmed BlackBerry users fret over the future of the popular phones.
